Maanav Utkarsh Samithi is a NGO that is managed by Smt. Shyamala Rao and her family. This NGO has taken upon itself the task
of providing for a better life for the
thousand odd children that live in a nearby slum in Mira Road. Smt. Rao runs a school at
her premises in which many of these children are enrolled wherein she also
provides home cooked lunch to the children.
The parents of these children are simply not able to take care of them due to poverty and crime. As a result many of these
children are forced to rag-pick and most
disturbingly end up becoming additcted to gutkha and other drugs. Hence these
children also suffer from various related ailments chief amongst them being poor
oral hygiene.
At Mrs Rao’s request the
Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation arranged for a Oral Hygiene Camp for 90 children from this slum at Mrs Rao’s residence.
M/s Colgate Palmolive graciously consented to supply toothpaste and toothbrush to all the patients.
Dr. Grishma Shah from
Chembur and Dr. Shreya Bala from
Andheri were the dentists at this camp. The camp commenced with Veda chanting seeking
blessings from Swami.
90 children were examined over a period of 2 hours. 59 have been identified for follow up treatments like root canal, extractions
and fillings with 4 of them
needing urgent medical attention. The dentists also demonstrated the correct technique of
brushing the teeth to the children. The children ranged from age
group of 3 to 15.
A mechanism is being worked out for
completing the follow up treatment to all those identified.
The camp concluded with Arati to Bhagawan.
